Give us the elevator speech about your project (as in how would you describe your project to someone you meet in an elevator?):

My project is about being proactive in providing financial services to employees in the cannabis industry. Because there is a lot of confusion among financial institutions about how best to serve the cannabis industry, I’m reaching out to and welcoming cannabis employees with the best products and services available, so they too can feel the financial confidence they deserve. As states continue to legalize cannabis, pulling cash off the streets and into credit union accounts also contributes to keeping our communities safe. While other financial institutions are standing by, I’m stepping in to make a difference, and developing a template for other credit unions to do the same. This is Serving Cannabis.

What is your long-term career goal?

Helping people become successful is my desired career work – this includes influencing both credit union members and employees. I enjoy strategizing, the psychology of motivation and the power of unique people. No matter the position title, I am passionate about making connections, developing trust and challenging others to grow beyond their perceived limits.

Fill in the dots: The future of credit unions will be bright if…

We keep the most important things – our members and employees – in focus by going to great lengths to serve both better than any bank can. Keeping the spotlight on coaching and development will attract and engage employees. To do the same for members, we must illuminate the credit union value proposition with a thoughtful recipe of product design, strategic delivery and a world-class experience.

What my generation brings to the credit union movement is …

a difference of perspective. I am representing a highly-motivated, open-minded and ambitious generation that must be heard and engaged in strategic conversation. We recognize we have a lot to offer, and still plenty to learn.

I asked a few people why they consider me a leader. Here are their words:

Michael challenges me. He makes me step out of my comfort zone and pushes me to be a better employee and person. Michael sees potential in me that I, and others, may not see.

Michael is a mentor, someone who cares about his staff and is a trusted guide. He is a collaborator, someone who is willing to brainstorm with you for as long as it takes to get it right. He is an advisor from whom I can ask honest feedback and guidance. He is definitely a trailblazer, someone I will gladly follow into unchartered territory.

Michael sees things in individuals that others do not see. Specifically, he sees the true potential of an individual and helps motivate them to reach that potential. Michael helps you find the answers and guides you in the right direction, understanding that you can still make mistakes but helps you learn from them. Michael will not give up on you, and he will push you to your limits in order to help you grow in ways that you could not even imagine. There are numerous individuals who have made it a long way in their careers because at some point in time Michael challenged them to be greater, because he knew they could.

Who is your hero and why?

My father is my hero because he taught me through his actions. He was brave and ambitious when he moved across the country to start a family. He was savvy and resourceful when he built the home I grew up in. He was a smart and honest business man, and a tough and loving father of four. He was a courageous fighter, even when he knew he wouldn’t win.

Who is a must-follow on Twitter?

@elonmusk is incredible, simply for his innovation and aptitude to elicit meaningful change. His latest venture – The Boring Company – is anything but…I hope Seattle is on his boring list!

What is your favorite CUES member benefit? Or, if you are a new CUES NextGen member, what benefit are you most looking forward to using?

I’m looking forward to checking out the networking opportunities available through CUES. CUES Net and the CUES Councils look like great ways to discover others with similar interests and continue learning. Developing what and who I know through CUES sounds like a win-win to me.

Online voters and a panel of past finalists narrowed the CUES Next Top Credit Union Exec field from 19 to the Top 15 applicants. The challenge, held in conjunction with DDJ Myers and powered by Currency, searches for emerging leaders age 35 and under from within the credit union industry.

The Top 15 will blog about their project. And to provide additional value to the competition experience, they’ll each receive an executive coaching session from DDJ Myers, a CUES Supplier member and strategic provider. A judging panel of two CUES members and Deedee Myers of DDJ Myers will then score the Top 15’s applications and blog posts, narrowing the competition to five finalists.

The five finalists will receive additional coaching, airfare, accommodation and registration to CUES’ CEO/Executive Team Network™, Oct. 10-12 in Las Vegas, where they will give their final presentations. The 2017 CUES Next Top Credit Union Exec will receive further coaching, airfare, accommodation and registration for two CUES’ CEO Institutes, a total prize package valued at $20,000.
