Trading Lemons for Lemonade

What better way to start the workweek than to read the heart-warming story of a credit union that has put a 35-year-old widow with five kids into a house? Seeing the good press $320 million CP Federal Credit Union got in the local Jackson, Mich., paper for its good deed is icing on the cake.

According to the article, the CU awarded a house it had foreclosed on in its first-ever "Wish Upon a Home" giveaway, after in-person interviews with four finalists. The program is similar to the "Home for the Holidays" giveaway Dort Federal Credit Union originated in 2008. The $461 million Flint, Mich., CU ran the contest again in 2009, this time awarding two homes and also generating great press.

Kudos to the leaders of both CUs! You've taken lemons and made lemonade for these families in a big way.

Would a similar contest work for your credit union?
