The Furthest Thing From a Junket

A lot has been written over time in our industry about CU leaders who abuse the idea of ongoing education. Recently we all read about a Hawaii CU with a particularly liberal board travel budget.

But I'm here to tell you a story of commitment and dedication to education.

At the end of the second full day of speaker presentation, lively group discussion and networking during last week's inaugural CUES Director Strategy Seminar, three director attendees stayed late in our meeting room. They got out their notes from the day and they went over them, typing up a report for the directors back at the credit union.

When I left the room, they kept working.

At the end of the last day of the seminar, the three lingered, talking. And so did many others--asking one last question of the speaker, considering a final point with a table companion, exchanging a business card, even picking up an article the speaker provided to read on the way home.

I hope you'll join me in applauding Leon Troeger, secretary; Tina Escalona, director; and Manny Hernandez, treasurer, of $184 million Parda Credit Union, Auburn Hills, Mich., and the other 60 attendees of this event for their commitment. Their learning will help them be outstanding directors who can lead their credit unions to success in serving members.
