Most recruiters scan a resume for just a few seconds before deciding whether to take a second, more in-depth review. The executive search consultants at DDJ Myers look at candidate resumes for C-level positions with an eye for accomplishments, expertise, value added and education. Our strong preference is to see a college degree followed by frequent and relevant ongoing education. For us, seeing completion of CUES’ CEO Institute makes a resume a standout.
When our recruiters see a candidate resume that lists graduation from CEO Institute I, II and III and a completed between-segments project (with the resulting designation of Certified Chief Executive, CCE), we assume the candidate:
-
Has high current and potential value for the employing credit union—enough so that the CU thought it worthwhile to invest this person’s time and tuition to attend the program.
-
Has a commitment to learning, and the capacity to balance a rigorous education program simultaneously with their current credit union role and personal obligations.
-
Is likely to encourage ongoing learning at his or her credit union, thereby supporting a culture that fosters professional development.
-
Embodies a quality of knowledge that is strategic and forward-thinking.
Seeing CEO Institute on a resume doesn't just add to that candidate's credibility with us as recruiters. Our clients also appreciate the commitment to ongoing education that a candidate's CEO Institute experience underscores.
In fact, we think so highly of CEO Institute that we often recommend it as a resource to participants in our C Yourself program, designed to support current and future C-level executives. Participants in this program receive a custom leadership development plan and, when relevant, we include CEO Institute. As far back as I can remember, every C Yourself participant has received the support of their CEO to attend.
The industry needs ongoing learners so we remain viable and relevant. If you have the opportunity to complete the three CEO Institutes, complete the between-segments project and become John Smith, CCE, I encourage you to do so. Next you’re applying for a C-level spot, your resume will get an extra read.
