Career Tips

Recently I attended the Association Media and Publishing Annual Meeting. I loved networking with others in my profession and I learned a lot about various media trends, including video and mobile apps. But there was one session featuring the association’s immediate past and incoming presidents of the board sharing career tips. I think these tips apply to all industries, including credit unions.

  • Move around; take new jobs frequently.
  • Take risks.
  • Volunteer in your association’s committees.
  • Be honest, trustworthy, eager to improve and dedicated to being your best self.
  • Understand the financial side of things. If you are not an accountant, ask your colleagues in accounting for informal lessons.
  • Go to lunch with managers and directors in other areas to build relationships and understand other issues related to your business.
  • Know a little bit about everything.
  • Don’t be a jerk.
  • Don’t be entitled.
  • Don’t be arrogant. Not only do you need to keep growing, you need to KNOW that you need to keep growing.
  • Promote your job: Add tasks, responsibility, expand its focus. Volunteer to take on new projects.
  • Decide to be happy. This was my favorite tip. You might not love your job every day or love every task you need to do but if you decide to be happy and decide to focus on the parts that are truly fun, then that shows.
