During two days in May, the CUES staff met to work on our internal culture. Fun came up again and again. We wanted to have more fun! We all really like each other and we discovered that when we are all together (many of us work remotely at least one day a week), we have a lot of fun. But day-to-day work and life issues often get in the way. We might get swamped in a big project and forget to come up for air and fun. So we brainstormed ways to make time for fun at work. Not surprisingly, food was high on the list! Several ideas were compiled and then we all voted for our favorites, which were:
- quarterly potluck lunches;
- meetings held outside on nice days (we’re even adding the patio to our email program so we can reserve it like a conference room!);
- trivia, office pools and bingo games via email, allowing our several telecommuters to participate, too (This telecommuter was really excited about the Emmy Awards ballot we did in September!);
- lunchtime lawn games/tournaments; and
- hanging out together after work (two remote staffers will be responsible for organizing events when they are in town).
