Give us the elevator speech about your project (as in how would you describe your project to someone you meet in an elevator?):

There’s too much noise and competition out there for marketing efforts alone to have a big impact. Therefore, the next wave of marketing must connect product with brand and make sure every product you have speaks to who you are as a credit union. Let the value of the product sell your credit union rather than the other way around. Everyone’s challenge then is to be introspective: review and redefine your products.

What is your long-term career goal?

To make an impact through redefining what role a financial institution can play in my community.

Fill in the dots: The future of credit unions will be bright if ...

The industry truly becomes a movement and focuses more energy on what defined credit unions at their origin, namely that access to low cost funds can empower people across all spectrums of life to live better. This rising tide lifts all boats in a community.

What my generation brings to the credit union movement is …

A new energy. Our generation really isn’t any more connected to causes than those that came before us, nor are we the lazy millennial stereotype. What we are is a fresh take on the industry with a passion to make an impact and prove ourselves. We just need a steady, encouraging hand to guide us.

People consider me a leader because …

I’m a fighter and because I strive to put people in a position to succeed. I’m also incredibly funny, look like a young Brad Pitt and am the most humble person in the world.

Who is your hero and why?

I won’t be much of an original here, but Elon Musk for his ability to inspire with audacious visions that prove business can be profitable while also remaking our economy. My second would be Edward Filene who was a such a passionate advocate for workers’ rights that he helped “uber” the banking system and provide financial services to all.

Who is a must-follow on Twitter?

Samantha Paxson (@samsmythpaxson) and Jason Vitug (@JasonVitug) are my current favorites. The former for her work with digital transformation and the latter for his unique and effective take on financial education.

What is your favorite CUES member benefit? Or, if you are a new CUES NextGen member, what benefit are you most looking forward to using?

The discount on CUES conferences and schools, especially those geared towards marketing.

Online voters and a panel of past finalists narrowed the CUES Next Top Credit Union Exec field from 19 to the Top 15 applicants. The challenge, held in conjunction with DDJ Myers and powered by Currency, searches for emerging leaders age 35 and under from within the credit union industry.

The Top 15 will blog about their project. And to provide additional value to the competition experience, they’ll each receive an executive coaching session from DDJ Myers, a CUES Supplier member and strategic provider. A judging panel of two CUES members and Deedee Myers of DDJ Myers will then score the Top 15’s applications and blog posts, narrowing the competition to five finalists.

The five finalists will receive additional coaching, airfare, accommodation and registration to CUES’ CEO/Executive Team Network™, Oct. 10-12 in Las Vegas, where they will give their final presentations. The 2017 CUES Next Top Credit Union Exec will receive further coaching, airfare, accommodation and registration for two CUES’ CEO Institutes, a total prize package valued at $20,000.
