'Fun' First--or How Would You Phrase it?

I've been having trouble articulating an idea that came into my head during FORUM Symposium early this month in Indianapolis. Maybe you can help.

The idea is basically that entertainment in marketing brings people in and makes it possible to effectively tell people the "boring" stuff they need to know.

There's a lot of talk in my world about thinking positive and keeping a positive outlook. In practice, I really do try to operate as positively as possible.

But two elements of last week's FORUM Symposium in Indianapolis reminded me that a certain amount of skepticism is a really healthy thing.

Now is the Time for Greater Cooperation, Not Merger

In yesterday's Skybox post, six credit union CEOs called for the merger of CUNA and NAFCU into a new entity that would, according to the post, better serve the needs of our industry. I respect those seeking to improve the credit union system and encourage more cooperation among our associations, but I do not feel that this is the time to be talking about a merger.

How do You Get People Fired up?

Yesterday at FORUM Partnership Symposium in "Indy," William Azaroff of Vancity Credit Union, Vancouver, British Columbia, greeted me by asking, "What's new?"

I shared my excitement that my town (Mendon, N.Y.) had voted the night before to fund a new library with a bond issue of $1.35 million. I said I had thoroughly enjoyed being part of the group of volunteers that had worked to get people fired up to vote yes.
